It’s nearly go time: The 2013 Oscars will air Sunday evening. You’re likely scrambling to fill out your office pool, debating whether you can catch up with the Best Picture nominees (you can’t; there are nine, bro) and stocking up on the vino to prep for Hollywood’s big night. Just in case our Oscar picks weren’t good enough for you, we wrangled a bona fide movie star to share his expert second opinion.
Please welcome Josh Duhamel, star of “Safe Haven,” to the arena. The guy straddles the line between normalcy and the Academy: He watches the awards at home, but he’s also, you know, married to Fergie and working as an actor. And he’s no slouch when it comes to the awards circuit, either: Duhamel will host the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards next month.
When we caught up with the very candid Duhamel prior to the V-Day release of “Safe Haven,” we weaseled a few of his Oscar picks out of him, and learned which Best Picture decision still has him red in the face (Hint: Its lead characters are blue in the face.)
So are you up on all the Academy Awards stuff?
Yep, yep, we’ve seen them all. You know, we saw “The Master” last night. You know, I really loved the performances. It got a little bit long, but you know, Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams were all really good in it. God, so good!
Do you think Joaquin Phoenix has a chance at beating Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor?
I think he may. I think he, I mean, Daniel Day-Lewis is pretty amazing. I think that if you’re going by level of difficulty, Daniel Day-Lewis will probably win it. But pure originality and creating a character out of the blue like that, I thought Joaquin Phoenix was really good. Really good!
And overall I think “Argo” is probably my favorite movie.
Do you like that for Best Picture?
Do you think that’ll win, or do you just want it to win?
You know, you can never tell. I still can’t believe “The Hurt Locker” beat “Avatar.” To me, “Avatar” was a movie that shifted — it was “E.T.” That was “Star Wars”! That movie deserved to win. Although “The Hurt Locker” was a good movie, I don’t know if it was as good as “Avatar,” just in terms of monumental sort of filmmaking. So I can never predict this stuff, you never know what they’re going to say, but I’m going with “Argo.”
I haven’t seen “Amour,” is “Amour” good? “Zero Dark Thirty” was good, a good movie. Of the ones I’ve seen, I think I enjoyed the ride of “Argo” the best. “Silver Linings Playbook” was good too, I’m a big Jennifer Lawrence fan. And Bradley Cooper. I think they’re both great.
Do you go to parties or do you watch the Oscars at home?
No, man, I watch at home. I’m a homebody.
Do you have betting pools?
No, no. I just, I don’t see it as a, they’re all, just to get nominated, they’re all good, so I don’t really root for one against the other. It’s a popularity contest anyway.
